If you’ve never had a speech therapist in your life, what they do is as difficult as it is amazing.
I read a touching story from a parent who spoke about his journey with his son and how speech therapy changed his son’s life. Parents may relate to this experience, which happened after a special pre-K playgroup for children with special needs:
One hour later I sat in my car crying. While the other children, some younger than him, were able to follow basic instructions, Jackson would listen for a moment and then go off and do whatever he wanted. If they pushed him even a little he cried. So outside we sat in the car where he looked at the clouds and I cried.
Enter Speech-Language Pathologist, Catherine Kunz. Cathy partnered with the family over three years to reach the other side of dyspraxia. John wrote,
As she wrapped up her session with him the other day she said five words I never thought I’d hear — “He doesn’t need me anymore.”
You see Jackson is better now and the words come. So much so that there are times when I want to look into the rear view mirror of the car and tell him to stop talking for a minute so I can concentrate on the road. I don’t of course because I remember sitting in that parking lot three years and three months ago when my little boy was shut out from the world.
