"When a team outgrows individual performance and learns team confidence, excellence becomes a reality."
- Joe Paterno

Hi Everyone,

My colleague sent me this great link about building virtual teams. As a provider of on-line therapy services, my speech team lives internationally. It is key to me that they feel like a valued member of a cohesive team. At the same time, it is essential that I set the framework for service excellence to our schools. How does this happen when you cannot sit around the same table?

I know for sure that effective communication is the foundation for success. Furthermore, team members must share a common vision. Regardless of their role - they are all valued contributors to the overall goal and spirit of your company. I once heard about the elevator test. If any of your team entered an elevator and I asked, "What is your company's paramount focus?" would he or she know what to say? One of my priorities for this month is to improve my employee recognition program and other team building initiatives like the newsletter called Together. Together we are growing smiles, mending spirits, and engaging children in their lives. Together is the opposite of isolation.

It is a privilege to work with my team and each day I strive to empower them, guide them, and learn from them. This is echoed in the article, which in part reads:

A virtual team is one whose members share a common purpose, but are separated by distance, time, and organizational boundaries. In such a team, members are linked only by communication technologies.

This article will highlight several recommended approaches for building a strong foundation for a newly created virtual team.

Included are:
• Establishing a Well Understood Purpose (Mission, goals, tasks, results)
• Clarifying Stakeholder Expectations
• Understanding Team Membership
• Clear and Complimentary of Roles and Responsibilities
• Building Rapport and Relationships
• Instituting Communication Practices and Protocols
